How to Read Ounces on a Digital Scale

Digital Scales

The Digital Scale is a sophisticated weight measurement tool that gives a more accurate reading than the traditional analog scale.

We can track our weight loss or gain by using a bathroom digital scale to accurately measure body weight. On the other hand,  digital kitchen scales can be used to measure cooking ingredients accurately.

Digital scales measure weight in pounds and ounces, and most include the metric measurements in grams and kilograms too. With some basic knowledge in math, reading ounces on a digital scale is simple.

You can find the basic steps for how to read the digital scale below,

  • Switch on your digital scale and check whether the reading is set to 0.0.
  • If it is a kitchen scale, place whatever needs to be weighed on the scale, and if it is a bathroom scale, keep yourself immobile, until the weight scaling is complete.
  • Most digital scales measure ounces in 0.2-pound increments. Be aware that, ounces are incredibly light units of weight measurement. Even a slight movement will change the reading on digital scales they are highly sensitive. Therefore, make sure to stay still when weighing body weight on a digital bathroom scale.
  • Now, you can calculate the weight based on your digital scale readings. Keep in mind that there are sixteen ounces in every pound. In other words, every 0.2 pounds equals slightly more than 3 ounces.
Check the following weight readings as examples
  1. 24.4 pounds =  24 pounds and 6 ounces (approximately)
  2. 64.2 pounds =  64 pounds and 3 ounces (approximately)

Pro-Tip

Most digital kitchen scales have a "tare" button. This comes in handy when your content can not be placed easily on the digital scale's platform. In this situation, put the contents that need to be weighed in a cup, bowl, or any type of container and press the "tare" button. This will neglect the weight of the container from the weight calculation.
